The Wild Trees: A Story of Passion and Daring

The Wild Trees

Announcing a new book from the #1 bestselling author of The Hot Zone, a spellbinding account of the courage and passion in one of the last great unexplored realms on earth: the giant redwood canopy in the rain forest of California.

Sillett and AntoineIn the 1990s, a handful of talented climbers and amateur naturalists began exploring the unseen areas of dense rain forest on the coast of Northern California, where the last remaining giant redwood trees are hidden. Richard Preston, author of The Wild Trees, tells the love story of Dr. Steve Sillett and botanist Marie Antoine, climbers who opened to human knowledge the world’s tallest forests. Dr. Sillett, a four time recipient of research grants from Save-the-Redwoods League, credits the League for protecting what remains of the primeval redwood forests he studies.

HyerionThe author mastered the techniques of tall-tree climbing and worked as a professional expedition climber. He accompanied Dr. Sillett on the expedition organized by Save-the Redwoods League this last fall to measure Hyperion, the world's tallest living thing.

Mr. Preston will introduce his book on tour beginning in April.

Advance Praise for The Wild Trees:

“Enthralling.”
―Kirkus Reviews * (starred)

“Preston's tireless research, crystalline writing style and narrative gifts are well suited to the subject. Sillett, Taylor and their cohorts, who include a Canadian botanist named Marie Antoine, are fascinating, often deeply wounded characters. Their collective passion and intensity have illuminated one of the most vulnerable and poorly understood ecosystems on this continent. Preston adds a personal twist by mastering the arcane tree climber's art of "skywalking" and partnering with Sillett and Antoine on some of their most ambitious ascents.”
―Publishers Weekly

“Preston's hands-on perspective, suspenseful chronicling of the adventures of these vividly portrayed redwood experts, and glorious descriptions of the tall trees' splendor and ecological significance make for a transfixing read.”
―Booklist

“A superlative work of narrative nonfiction.”
―Discover Magazine

"Richard Preston's account of the Hyperion climb brings to life the extraordinary redwoods experience. With the help of Preston and other environmental advocates, we hope to inspire future generations to discover, explore and ultimately protect these majestic trees."
―Ruskin Hartley, executive director of Save-the-Redwoods League
