League Meets Goal for Montgomery Woods Challenge Grant![]() Montgomery Woods Thanks to generous donations from individual supporters, Save-the-Redwoods League reached its December 31, 2007, campaign goal of matching a $200,000 challenge grant to support an expansion of Montgomery Woods. The Hind Foundation, the Keith Campbell Foundation for the Environment and the Mattson Family Conservation Foundation provided $150,000, $35,000 and $15,000, respectively, to the generous challenge grant that matched every donated dollar up to $200,000. The more than $400,000 secured in this campaign, when combined with funds from the Preserving Wild California program of the Resources Legacy Fund Foundation, California Coastal Conservancy, California State Parks, and the California Wildlife Conservation Board, will enable the League to purchase land in urgent need of protection adjoining Montgomery Woods State Reserve in Mendocino County, California. The League is proceeding with the process of acquiring properties totaling 360 acres adjoining the Reserve, which shelters one of the region’s largest remaining stands of old-growth redwoods, as well as one of the world’s tallest trees. After the League purchases the 360 acres, it plans to transfer the land to the Reserve for permanent protection and stewardship. The League’s Master Plan for the Redwoods identifies acquisition of this land as a high priority because rural residential development in the area is imminent. Thanks to the League’s generous donors and partners, the addition will expand the protection of the Reserve’s ancient redwoods; improve watershed protection and restoration initiatives for the Big River watershed; and enhance opportunities for the public to visit the Reserve and better appreciate its role in the watershed. League plans include partnering with the Reserve to add interpretive trails, signage, maps and improved parking and picnic areas. Since 1919, the League has been a partner in protecting the Montgomery Woods area. The Reserve was created in 1945; since then, the League has made many strategic land acquisitions to expand its boundaries and buffer the ancient grove. In 2005, League members helped purchase three adjacent parcels to more than double the Reserve’s size to 2,300 acres. About Our Key Donors
