Throughout the past few years, Save-the-Redwoods League has been supportive of the government's plan to save the old-growth Headwaters Forest and other old-growth stands on Pacific Lumber Company property. The negotiated Habitat Conservation Plan and Sustained Yield Plan are, for the most part, better than we could have hoped for. There are some elements that we did not get, but it was a decent compromise. Monitoring is now the essential element. One hundred years from today the trees will still be protected, and available to future generations--that is the bottom line. At some point in the future the cost of protecting these trees will be a non-issue when compared with the gratitude of visitors and the protection of habitat for the multitude of species living there.
