Save-the-Redwoods League will award $50,000 in grant funds this year to qualified
K-12 educators, teachers and students. Grants are designed to aid educators
and students in their studies of forest stewardship and ecology, specifically
of the coast redwood and giant sequoia forest. Five major granting categories
are available: Classroom Supplies, Fieldtrips, Teacher Continuing Environmental
Education, Individual or Group Student Projects, and Independent Environmental
Educator Grants.
The deadline for grant proposals is June 3, 2002 and awards will be made by late August. Grant guidelines are available on the Leagues website at www.savetheredwoods.org or by calling the League at (888) 836-0005.
Last years grant recipients received a total of $30,000 from the League. Awards to schools and organizations in the Bay Area, and in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino and Santa Cruz counties funded curriculum development and materials, field study, and an environmental outreach program.
"Save-the-Redwoods League is committed to protection and preservation of the ancient coast redwood and giant sequoia forests. Education is critical to achieving this goal and we are delighted to work with teachers and students learning about Californias majestic redwood forest, said Brigit Kavanagh, the Leagues Education Director.
Since 1918, Save-the-Redwoods League, a non-profit organization, has worked to protect Californias primeval forests from destruction by including them in parks and reserves. To date, the League has assisted in preserving over 140,000 acres of forest lands in California.
