The Research Grants Program was established to help advance the scientific knowledge related to redwoods and improve people’s understanding of the environments in which redwood is a key component. The League has made grants to a wide variety of scientists studying various aspects of the coast redwood, giant sequoia and associated ecosystems including:
- A study of coast redwood and giant sequoia genetics. The League helped establish a redwood gene bank at the University of California at Berkeley. The gene bank provides invaluable information to researcher’s interested in investigating genetic and/or other biological processes across the natural ranges of both species.
- Investigations of ‘cryptic’ or hidden forms of biodiversity in coast redwood forests. Fern mats suspended hundreds of feet above the forest floor and the forest floor itself have been shown to support little known forms of biodiversity including canopy lichens and microscopic organisms related to crustaceans.
- Funding assistance for the writing of a new Annotated
Bibliography of the Biology of Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens).
