Legacy & Leadership: Celebrating 100 Years with our Supporters

Inaugural Redwood Legacy Circle Luncheon at The Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley.

We’re just over halfway through the year, and 2018 has already proven to be legendary for Save the Redwoods League. As you have probably heard, this year is the League’s 100th birthday, which has been a joyous cause for celebration! I am so glad that we were able to share our festivities and show our appreciation for members of the Redwood Legacy Circle, who have committed to the long-term protection of the redwoods by including the League in their estate plans.

At the beginning of May, we held our inaugural Redwood Legacy Circle Luncheon at UC Berkeley, in which members of the Redwood Legacy Circle were invited to view Sustaining Grandeur: The First 100 Years of Save the Redwoods League, an exhibition at The Bancroft Library showcasing historical artifacts that illustrate important moments in the League’s history. It was truly incredible to see firsthand how far the organization has come since its humble beginnings in 1918. What was more incredible to me, though, was being in a room full of fellow Legacy Circle members who are working to ensure that we are able to sustain the grandeur of the redwoods for another century.

This past June, we also had our Annual Celebration for Redwood Leadership Circle and Redwood Legacy Circle members at the California Academy of Sciences for a private viewing of their latest exhibit, Giants of Land and Sea, which showcased the redwoods as one of the giant forces that makes Northern California unlike any other place in the world. Fun-filled learning, lively conversations among our donors, and a lovely cocktail reception featuring delicious wine donated by MacRostie Winery & Vineyards, made for a fantastic evening.

What brought all of this together was a speech by Sam Hodder, League President and CEO. He highlighted the work that the League has accomplished in our first 100 years to stop the destruction of our superlative forests, and went over some key points of our Centennial Vision to safeguard these storied groves and heal the forests that surround them for the next century. Learn more about this conservation legacy and the League’s bold, new vision for our next 100 years.

As we’ve been saying since the year started, 100 years is just the beginning. Now it’s time to add momentum to a new era of conservation to bring back the forest and rebuild our parks. Being surrounded with people dedicated to making this a reality was inspiring to say the least, and I look forward to the work we will accomplish together in the next 100 years.
