‘Take Me to the Trees’ is a benefit event for the League’s Education and Parks Support Programs

SAN FRANCISCO (July 29, 2019)Save the Redwoods League, a 100-year-old organization committed to the protection of California’s iconic coast redwood and giant sequoia forests, presents “Take Me to the Trees,” the League’s second-annual celebration event. It will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2019, under the redwoods in the National AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park.

Tables and tickets to “Take Me to the Trees” are available online at SaveTheRedwoods.org/gala. Proceeds from the celebration benefit the League’s redwood education and parks support programs, which serve thousands of California school children and millions of visitors to the redwood parks each year.

“Following the remarkable success of our Centennial Celebration Gala last year—the League’s first—we recognized this type of event is a powerful way to generate excitement and support for programs that bring people into redwood forests,” said Sam Hodder, the League’s president and CEO. “There is no feeling on Earth like being immersed among these giants of nature. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we can continue to help make California’s redwood parks extraordinary and ensure that students around the state can experience the awe of these majestic trees.”

“Take Me to the Trees” begins under the redwoods with a cocktail reception, featuring custom artisanal beverages, and a surprise dramatic “tall-trees performance.”  Following the reception, guests will enjoy a conifer-inspired dinner created by McCalls Catering & Events and a live auction offering one-of-a-kind redwood experiences. The evening will end with live music and dancing under the stars.

Caryl and Mickey Hart will serve as honorary celebration chairs. Caryl Hart has served on the League’s board of directors since 2017, continuing her more than decade-long involvement with the organization. Bay Area native and musician Mickey Hart is an original member of the Grateful Dead.

“Mickey and I are inspired daily by the redwoods that surround us,” said Caryl Hart. “It is more important than ever to get young people out into the forests, and we are both delighted and honored to help steer this event to success in support of the League’s wonderful, impactful programs.”

James Campbell and Jessica Montague are co-chairs of the celebration committee, which includes Amy Berler, Steve Butler, Rosemary Cameron, Sandy Donnell, Frannie Fleishhacker, Sandy Gibson, Allegra Krasznekewicz, Sandra Otter, Julie Parish, Cameron Phleger, Ethan Ravage, Julia Sherwin, Claire Spaht, Kelly Tarapani, Nadine Weil, Rich Wendling, Mark Wentworth, and Barbara and Marty Winter.

Sparkling wine sponsor: Handley Cellars, a family-owned winery in Mendocino County. *Additional sponsor and event information to follow in early September.

About the League’s Education and Parks Support Programs
California’s state parks shelter 60 percent of the world’s remaining old-growth redwood forests, but they have also experienced declining funding over the past two decades despite an increased demand for services. The League’s parks support program transforms visitor experiences through improved access and interpretation and protects the redwoods and other natural resources within the parks. The League’s education program connects new generations to redwood forests by providing free field trips and education materials, teaching students about the importance of redwoods and what we all can do to protect them. For more information about these programs, visit savetheredwoods.org/what-we-do.

About Save the Redwoods League

In the process, the League has connected generations of visitors with the beauty and serenity of the redwood forest. The League’s 24,000 supporters have enabled the organization to protect more than 216,000 acres of irreplaceable forest in 66 state, national and local parks and reserves.
