Tranquil camping in a beautiful grove
HIGHLIGHTS: Located 3 miles north of Crescent City, Florence Keller County Park is a good choice for campers exploring the North Coast redwood parks and beaches. Managed by the Del Norte County Parks Department and set among large second-growth redwoods, it offers big sites and easy access to city amenities while still providing tranquil camping in a beautiful forested setting.
ACTIVITIES: Camping and picnicking are the primary activities, but the park also has volleyball and horseshoe pits. Several walking paths accommodate short strolls among the redwoods.
VISITOR CENTER: None.
CAMPGROUNDS: Fifty tent sites, all available on a first-come, first served basis, are spacious and offer good privacy. The campground also has two day-use areas for picnics.
TRAILS: Seven short trails allow for pleasant walks through the redwoods and campground.
MUST-SEE UNIQUE FEATURE or SEASONAL HIGHLIGHT: The John Dee Trail provides a particularly beautiful stroll. Ferns carpet the ground beneath the trees, and redwood-associated wildflowers, including trillium, are common in season.
HIDDEN GEM: A fallen tree on the John Dee Trail is a wonderful example of a phenomenon typical of toppled, but still viable, redwood trees: five vigorous trees growing directly out of the log.
FEATURES ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES: The picnic area, restrooms and the John Dee Trail are all accessible.
DOGS: Allowed on leash.
ENTRANCE FEE: None.
SPECIAL EVENTS: The two large picnic areas are often reserved for special events and programs. Call (707) 464-7230 for details.
MORE INFORMATION: Call (707) 464-7230.
EAT: Christine Aralia, Land Project Manager, suggests Good Harvest Cafe (external link) in Crescent City for large portions and fresh ingredients.
