I’ll Go If You Go Podcast
In this eleventh episode, host Emily Harwitz takes a closer look at career development programs specifically designed to give young people work experience in park and public land jobs. Many guests this season found their jobs in conservation by following wending paths toward their love for nature—and through a little bit of serendipity. That’s true for Alfonso Orozco who, guided by his own experiences navigating a career in parks and the outdoors, now leads the Career Pathways Grants Program at Parks California where he helps make job training programs possible and accessible.
One of the organizations that received a Career Pathways grant this year is the Santa Monica Mountains (SAMO) Fund, an official partner of the National Park Service. They help manage the award-winning SAMO Youth mentorship program for youth interested in exploring environmental careers. To share how this career development program works and how it changed their lives, today’s second featured guests are Adriana Barrera, Cecilia Lopez, and Javier Sandoval-Garcia, all former participants, and current staff of SAMO Youth.

About our guests
Alfonso Orozco is an outdoor enthusiast, global adventurer, and passionate advocate for equitable access to nature. Growing up in Oakland, California, and raised by immigrant parents, Alfonso developed a deep love for the outdoors, which inspired his career in the outdoors and conservation. Now, as an Associate Program Manager at Parks California, he helps lead the Career Pathways Grants Program, which strives to address access barriers and prepare participants for meaningful careers in parks.
Adriana Barrera was born and raised in El Sereno, East Los Angeles and currently lives in Tujunga, CA. Her first experience in a National Park was in high school with the Environmental Science Academy. Each Spring Break, she and her classmates fundraised for trips to Yosemite, sparking her desire to connect further with nature. This led her to join the SAMO Youth Program in 2009 which opened the doors to working at Point Reyes National Seashore as an Interpretive Guide, and in recent years as a Park Guide & SAMO Youth Supervisor and Mentor for the past 5 years. Adriana earned her B.A. in Visual Communications with an emphasis in Graphic Design from California State University, Los Angeles in 2021. In August of 2023, Adriana was hired as the Visual Information Specialist for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Now in her permanent role, Adriana gets to manage the park’s website, social media, and all things graphic design. Find her on Instagram @adrianabarrera.art

When she’s not working outside, she enjoys reading, swimming at her local pool, and exploring nearby cities. Find her on Instagram at @ceceeleah
Javier Sandoval-Garcia (he/him/el) is a supervisor for the SAMO Youth program. He has a B.S. degree in Biology from California State University Channel Islands.
