Video: Biking the San Vicente Redwoods with World Champion Kate Courtney

Conversation and recreation work in tandem on these new trails

We invited World Champion and Olympic mountain biker Kate Courtney to ride the trails of San Vicente Redwoods to demonstrate the relationship between conservation and recreation.

Late last year, a new network of trails opened to the public at San Vicente Redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This new access is the culmination of a partnership between the League, Sempervirens Fund, Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST), and Land Trust of Santa Cruz County to protect and restore this landscape and make it available to the public to enjoy. More than 7 miles of new trails are the first phase of a proposed 38-mile trail system offering ocean views and a forest in recovery from logging and the CZU Lightning Complex wildfires.

Wonderful that you’re helping restore the burnt forests. However we don’t think creating these high-speed mountain bike trails is a method for people enjoying nature! Creating automobile access and large parking lots is rather a step in increasing the dangers of forest and brush fires and not reducing the social and climatic-change causes for these avoidable conflagrations. Just look at the scars created by the bike trails and the world champions zipping through nature, neither observing nor looking right or left.

Perhaps we need more areas with very limited access similar to the “Lost Coast” in Northern California.

We appreciate your efforts to achieve any protection for our disappearing nature. But do the protected areas need to be used by 5 million people?

With best regards, from one native Californian and his wife, Richard and Kristina Forward
