2009 Walk Among GiantsSM Online Photo Contest

Meet the Winners

Thank you to the more than 1,000 voters who chose the three winning photos of
Save the Redwoods League’s first Walk Among Giants Online Photo Contest!

We also thank our contestants who entered almost 200 photos to spotlight the beauty of redwood ecosystems—and the importance of protecting these natural treasures now and in the future.

Congratulations to our winners:

JIM CLARK

Jim Clark With 30% of the vote, Jim Clark wins first prize, a package for two donated by Redwood Adventures that includes a one-night cabin stay and a guided tour of Redwood National Park. His photo of a stream meandering through Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve will be featured in League publications and on SaveTheRedwoods.org.

Clark said his winning photograph evokes the serenity he feels in the redwood forest. Originally from the Pacific Northwest and now living in San Mateo, California, Jim describes the redwood forest as an “oasis,” unlike anything he’s ever seen, where he can forget about the rest of the world. This shot was taken in February 2008 with a Canon EOS 1V and a 28-70mm zoom lens.

AVI SMITH

Avi SmithWith 22% of the vote, Avi Smith wins second prize, a one-night stay generously donated by the historic Requa Inn in Redwood National Park. His photo of the redwood canopy captures the size and splendor of these great trees in Muir Woods National Monument, which the San Francisco resident visits often. He enjoys living in a dynamic city surrounded by the awe-inspiring and easily accessible redwood forests of Marin County and beyond. He took the photo in February 2009 with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and a 17-40mm zoom lens.

ALISON YOUNG

Alison YoungWith 13% of the vote, Alison Young wins third prize: a beautiful card commemorating the planting of two redwood seedlings in her honor in a California State Park. The League will plant the seedlings to support reforestation. Young’s close-up of a snail taken along the Trillium Falls Trail in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (Redwood National Park) offers an intimate perspective of the small creatures living in this giant forest. In addition to feeling inspired by the majesty redwood trees, Young, of Lafayette, California, is fascinated by the treasures hidden in the duff of the forest floor, just waiting to be discovered. She took the macro photograph in May 2009 with a Fujifilm FinePix S5700.

Since 1918, Save the Redwoods League has saved ancient redwood forests and redwood ecosystems to ensure that current and future generations can feel the awe and peace that these precious natural wonders inspire. We also save redwoods because they are rare — their natural range is only in central and northern California and southern Oregon — and because they are Earth’s tallest and some of the oldest and most massive living beings.
