Can I submit images taken from my video camera?

Photographs taken via video camera can be entered as long as they meet the technical requirements of the contest. The photograph must be a JPEG or .jpg file and be at least 5 inches by 7 inches at 300 dpi, that is, 1,500 pixels by 2,100 pixels, which equals a file size of about 1,324K or 1.29 MB.

Do I need a professional camera for this contest?  Do I need to be a professional photographer?

A 3.2 megapixel point-and-shoot camera will record images with the quality necessary to meet the technical requirements of the contest.  You do not need to be a professional photographer to enter the contest. Submissions will be judged based on the content and quality of the photograph, not the experience or profession of the photographer.

How do I measure the size of my photograph so it meets contest requirements?

If your image is a hard copy image that you are scanning to digital form, be sure that the original image is at least 5 inches by 7 inches (1,500 pixels by 2,100 pixels), which equals a file size of about 1,324 K or 1.29 MB. You can determine your digital photo's dimensions in pixels by opening your photo's page on Flickr and clicking on "More properties" on the lower right side.  Remember that your photograph must be in JPEG or .jpg format.

Can I submit a black-and-white photograph?

No.  All submissions must be color photographs.

Does it matter if my photograph is in portrait or landscape orientation?

No.  Both portrait and landscape orientations are acceptable.

Can I submit a photograph that I have digitally enhanced?

Minor burning, dodging and/or color correction is acceptable. Cropping and fish-eye lenses are acceptable. High dynamic range images (HDRI) and stitched panoramas are acceptable only if the combined parts are all made around the same time.  All other changes are not permitted and will render the photograph ineligible for a prize.

How many photographs can I submit?

Each contestant may submit up to ten (10) photographs.

How old can my submitted photograph be?

All photographs must have been taken within two years of their submission date.

Can I submit printed photographs through the US Postal Service?

No.  All photographs must be submitted digitally via Flickr.com.  We do, however, accept scanned images of negatives, transparencies, and photographic prints as long as they meet the technical requirements outlined above.

Are there contest divisions based on age, experience, etc.?

No.  There are no levels or divisions for different ages, expertise, or otherwise. All submissions enter a single voting pool which will determine three top winners. Contestants must be legal residents of the United States of America who have reached 18 years of age at the time of entry.

Who is eligible to submit a photograph?

The Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States of America who have reached 18 years of age at the time of entry. Employees of Save the Redwoods League and affiliates, and their immediate family members (spouse, parent, child, sibling, and their respective spouses, regardless of where they live) or persons living in the same households of such employees, whether or not related, are not eligible.

Will contestants be compensated for their entries?

No.  There is no compensation for contestants.  The top three winners will receive nonmonetary prizes that cannot be substituted for cash.

What will happen to my photograph(s) when I submit them to this contest?

By entering the Contest, all entrants grant an irrevocable perpetual, nonexclusive license to Authorized Parties to reproduce, distribute, display, and create derivative works of the entries (along with a name credit) in connection with the Contest and promotion of the Contest, in any media now or hereafter known, including, but not limited to display on SaveTheRedwoods.org and in Save the Redwoods League publications.

For more than 90 years, Save the Redwoods League has been dedicated to protecting the ancient redwood forests so all generations can experience the inspiration and majesty of redwoods. In 1850, there were nearly 2 million acres of ancient coast redwood forests in California. Today, less than 5 percent remains and faces threats from unsustainable logging practices, poorly planned development and global climate change. Since its founding in 1918, the League has completed the purchase of more than 189,000 acres of land.
