Save-the-Redwoods League: Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt Redwoods State Park to be expanded by League's efforts

February 16, 2000

Save-the-Redwoods League has purchased 127 acres on the Avenue of the Giants near Redcrest, CA. Purchased from the Daly family of Eureka, owners of the Daly Brothers Department Store, the property contains scattered beautiful old-growth trees of spectacular size and age.

Charles M. Daly, a Councillor of Save-the-Redwoods League from 1940 until his death, was actively engaged in the conservation efforts in Humboldt County. The League contributed to a settlement with all family members who inherited the property to bring these lands into the State Park system as part of Mr. Daly's legacy.

According to League Executive Director Kate Anderton, "As we conserve the magnificent redwood forests for future generations, we seek projects like the Daly acquisition that benefit previously protected lands to expand their wildlife and recreation value."

Since structures on the property have fallen into serious disrepair, the League plans to return the land to its natural condition, which will involve some level of reforestation.

The Save-the-Redwoods League is a nonprofit organization, established in 1918, that acquires Coast Redwood and Giant Sequoia forest lands for protection in the 37 California Redwood State Parks, in Redwood National Park, and in other public parks and preserves. The League has contributed more than $4 billion worth of land to the California State Parks and Redwood National Park in the 82 years since its founding.
