Fire in Montgomery Woods

Our Members’ Support Helps Reopen Redwood Park

Donations from Save the Redwoods League members supported trail restoration that allowed Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve to reopen after June 21 lightning fires (pictured) burned 950 acres. Until November 21, parts of the park had been closed since the fire was extinguished to protect the public from falling limbs, trees and other fire-related conditions. The reserve shelters one of the region's largest remaining stands of old-growth redwoods. Since 1945, Save the Redwoods has protected more than 2,100 acres in the park. Read the Staff Member's Favorite Redwood Hike below to learn more about how to enjoy the park, or plan your next visit!

Winner of Our Raffle Gets a Night at Resort

A visit to Save the Redwoods League’s booth (pictured) at the October 19 Humboldt Redwoods Marathon paid off for Rebecca Johnson from Ashland, Oregon, who entered our raffle and won a night at the Benbow Hotel & Resort. The Garberville, California, hotel generously donated the prize to help raise awareness of the League’s mission. We sponsored the marathon in Humboldt Redwoods State Park.

Favorite Redwood Hike: Montgomery Woods Trail

Difficulty/Distance: Easy; 2 miles

Why I like it: Montgomery Woods is a remote redwood state park, so I like the feeling of being in an especially quiet, peaceful grove. And the park has towering ancient redwood giants, including one of the world's tallest trees!

Best time to visit: Now is a good time to visit to see the resilient redwood forest recover from last summer’s fires. Just remember to bring a rain jacket!

Other places to visit nearby: The city of Ukiah, 13 miles east of the reserve, is home to a number of holiday activities this month.

Featured Favorite Redwood Memory

"I experienced a walk through an ancient redwood forest that was a portal through time. It allows me to see things as they once were—pristine and primeval. All of these great trees need to be protected forever."

— Maynard, member since 1978
