Further progress on Redwood National and State Parks Trails Gateway & Prairie Creek Restoration
Work in Prairie Creek kicks off effort to bring nature back to former Orick Mill site.
By breaking ground, partners are writing a new chapter for a former Orick redwood mill site at the confluence of Prairie Creek and Redwood Creek. For decades the mill site has remained as a scar on the landscape, a reminder of that misguided past. Now that’s changing. The League has begun restoring the site and constructing a southern visitor gateway to Redwood National and State Parks.
Save the Redwoods League is constructing a southern gateway to Redwood National and State Parks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Humboldt County that attracts more than one million people each year to see the planet’s tallest trees and explore the area’s rich Indigenous heritage.
The Orick Mill Site, a 125-acre property in the Prairie Creek Scenic Corridor, was a top priority for acquisition by the League for a long time. It’s not hard to see why: the property is nestled between the most iconic redwood groves in the world — the groves of Redwood National and State Parks. But land acquisitions — and the resulting changes in land management — are complicated affairs, especially if you happen to be a herd of Roosevelt elk.
Hoping to catch a glimpse of the various wild animals living on and passing through the Orick Mill Site, Save the Redwoods League set up multiple wildlife cameras – and we found some incredible species on the property.
When you drive north on Highway 101, just past the small town of Orick, you will begin to marvel at the giant redwoods of Redwood National and State Parks. There is no sign letting you know you have arrived; you just slowly become shaded by the great canopies towering above you.
Gifts from Save the Redwoods League members like you protected another key piece of the Prairie Creek Scenic Corridor: the Berry Glen Trail Connection surrounded by Redwood National Park. See how you can heal this magical corridor for iconic wildlife and create a welcoming gateway for visitors.
