Proposition 4 win brings $10 billion to climate fight

California voters pass largest natural resources bond in nation's history

Yes on Prop 4

Something to celebrate

The election brought with it many results, and in California, there is a major accomplishment to celebrate: Nearly 60% of voters across a wide range of demographics passed Proposition 4, securing $10 billion for climate resilience.

This is a major victory for our families and communities, our redwood forests, and our entire state. Prop 4 funding will go toward proven nature-based solutions to prevent devastating and costly wildfires, provide clean and reliable drinking water, and safeguard California’s iconic forests and beaches.

The passage of Prop 4 comes at a critical juncture. With California’s projected budget deficits, allocations for the state agencies that historically have financially backed forest restoration and conservation projects face diminished resources. This bond will help restore some of that essential funding.

“This outcome demonstrates significant voter support for climate action and for the protection of California’s natural resources, including our treasured redwood forests, as proven climate solutions. Natural disasters fueled by a changing climate should be prevented, not endured,” said Sam Hodder, president and CEO of Save the Redwoods League and co-chair of the Clean Water Natural Resources and Parks Coalition. “Now, we can invest in building resilience and reducing our vulnerability to the threats from wildfires, a whiplash water cycle, and the strain of extreme heat.”

Prop 4 will be a game changer for the redwoods

The bond includes significant allocations that could directly benefit redwood conservation:

  • ~$1.9 billion for the Wildlife Conservation Board and State Coastal Conservancy
  • $725 million for California State Parks
  • $175 million for CalFire forest health projects
  • Protection from threats: The bond will allocate funds for land acquisition, which means that redwood forests that might otherwise be impacted by logging or real estate development would be protected.
  • Restoration and wildfire resilience: With climate change increasing the risk of catastrophic fires, Prop 4 will fund restoration projects to build wildfire resilience in coast redwood and giant sequoia forests. This includes support for tribal cultural burning practices, which have played a crucial role in forest management since time immemorial.
  • Improved public access: By funding the creation of new parks in underserved communities and maintaining existing state parks, Prop 4 will help connect more Californians with the state’s natural wonders.
  • Consistent funding source: As prior funding sources become depleted, Prop 4 will provide a reliable stream of financial support for projects that protect natural resources. This is critical for long-term conservation efforts.

The passage of Prop 4 marks a historic shift toward a safer, more sustainable future for California. That is definitely something to celebrate!
