League Honored: Cal State Parks Grants Award for Partnership

California State Parks (CSP) honored Save the Redwoods League on May 19, 2010, with its prestigious Dewitt Award for Partnership, which recognizes commitment above and beyond the call of duty in protecting public lands over a substantial time period. CSP presents this award to those who have served as irreplaceable partners in the accomplishment of its mission.

Since our establishment in 1918, the League has assisted in the purchase of more than 187,000 acres to protect redwoods and helped develop 62 redwood parks and reserves that capture the diversity of the redwood forest for everyone to enjoy.

The Dewitt award was named after its first recipient, John B. Dewitt (1937-1996), who devoted his life to the protection of public lands. During his 30 years as Executive Director of Save the Redwoods League, the League raised $65 million and purchased more than 30,000 acres of redwood forest for public parks and preserves.

Endorse Parks Ballot Initiative

You can still take action to support a funding measure to keep our chronically underfunded California state parks open: Complete endorsement forms as an individual or an organization. Meanwhile, the 760,000 signatures that were collected to put the measure on the November 2010 ballot are being verified. We are confident that they will qualify in June. California state parks parks include many redwood parks that Save the Redwoods League members helped create. Support your redwood parks – visit them!

Parks Funding Solution Qualifies for Ballot

Due partly to our members’ signatures, a measure that will provide stable, adequate funding to keep California state parks open has qualified for the November 2 statewide ballot. Californians, vote for Proposition 21 to keep redwood parks and other state parks open; if you live out of the state, tell your Californian friends and relatives to vote for the initiative! Meanwhile, support California state parks by visiting them, capturing your trip with a camera and entering our photo contest.
