Atkins Place

Protected: A remote redwood forest to buffer the ancient grove of Montgomery Woods

High on an overlook deep in Mendocino County, Atkins Place sits in a strategic location adjacent to the magical Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve. Here in the traditional land of the Northern Pomo people, healthy second-growth redwood forests buffer the exquisite old growth of the reserve, making it a critical habitat corridor.

The League acquired this land in August 2022, safeguarding it from future potential subdivision and development. Ultimately, the League intends for Atkins Place to be included as part of Montgomery Woods, providing better protection for the natural wonders of the old-growth reserve.

This project is part of the Montgomery Woods Initiative — a big vision to expand protection around Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve and improve access to this spectacular old-growth grove. Related projects include a partnership with California State Parks to redesign the visitor experience in Montgomery Woods, and an opportunity to acquire a conservation easement on the 3,862-acre Weger Ranch property. The latter would include a fee acquisition of Rocky Ridge, an 80-acre parcel that the League would donate via a direct deed from the owners to California State Parks as an addition to Montgomery Woods. The Rocky Ridge acquisition would provide an opportunity to expand the reserve’s trail network to a ridge overlooking the grove’s old-growth canopy and the surrounding landscape.
