New League Centennial Activities: Concerts, Major Exhibit

Concerts among the redwoods and a preview of the California Academy of Sciences’ amazing new exhibit are among the new, fun, and fascinating events celebrating redwoods and the League’s Centennial — and you’re invited!

California Academy of Sciences’ Giants of Land and Sea Exhibit

Exhibit opens June 15, 2018

Life at the edge of land and sea is a dynamic, ever-changing place — where fog rolls in, tectonic plates shift, and rocky coastlines trace the majestic outline of our state’s rich natural history. Visitors to the California Academy of Sciences will discover the giant wonders that make Northern California like nowhere else in the world at Giants of Land and Sea. In this brand new exhibit filled with larger-than-life interactives, visitors will experience the epicness of the state’s iconic landscape — including redwoods.

An intimate, multimedia experience will invite visitors to virtually ascend from the forest floor to the redwood canopy alongside scientists who brave incredible heights to study the complex ecological structure and charismatic wildlife that make these mighty giants their home. Standing face to face with a real 8,500-lb. cross-section from a fallen ancient redwood that took root around the year 1200, visitors will use a digital touchscreen to “read the redwoods” while examining its tree rings to learn about key periods in the tree’s life. In partnership with Save the Redwoods League, visitors will also learn about coast redwood ecology and local conservation.

On June 5, Californians passed Proposition 68, the Clean Water and Safe Parks Act, authorizing $4.1 billion in support of our state’s water, parks, and natural resources. With Prop 68 passed, the League and our partners will be able to improve existing redwood parks and reserves, like the historically logged forests within Redwood National and State Parks, making them more accessible and more resilient to drought, wildfire, and flood.
