Major League Celebrations at Giants Game

Two organizations that celebrate the giants of the West Coast are marking milestones together. As a Lead Centennial Partner, the San Francisco Giants are spotlighting the 100th anniversary of Save the Redwoods League. In turn, the League is celebrating the baseball team’s 60th anniversary. You’re invited to join these major league celebrations on Saturday, August 25, 2018! Get tickets (external link).

“What a monumental year for both of our organizations, when we celebrate significant anniversaries as members of the San Francisco community,” said Larry Baer, President and Chief Executive Officer of the San Francisco Giants. “As a fourth-generation Californian, it makes me proud to be associated with Save the Redwoods League as they celebrate their 100 years of hard work and success. Redwoods are the original giants of the West Coast, and I’m thankful for the League’s efforts to protect these amazing trees. This is truly a partnership of Giants!”

Giants mascot Lou Seal is cheering for both anniversaries. He and League President Sam Hodder star in a new video highlighting their recent trip in Big Basin Redwoods State Park. The video will play this season at AT&T Park before select Giants games, and you can see it here.

“The Giants and the California redwoods are iconic symbols of why the Bay Area is such a tremendous place to live,” said Hodder. “To bring all of these giants together in our Centennial year helps us to tell our story and inspire the people of the Bay Area and beyond to engage with us as we save these forests. The giants of the coast redwood and giant sequoia forests need us to invest in their protection and restoration. As Californians, we need these forests to be vibrant and resilient ecosystems to ensure a healthy future. Through our partnership, the San Francisco Giants are helping to tell our story, engaging the people of the Bay Area in our work to protect and restore these forests and connect people with their peace and beauty.”

About Save the Redwoods League

Since 1918, Save the Redwoods League has protected and restored redwood forests and connected people with their peace and beauty so these wonders of the natural world flourish.

Celebrations of the Century: Join us Oct. 7-14

on

It has been 100 years since the founders of Save the Redwoods League first resolved to protect California’s redwood forests — a mission that would build momentum for America’s conservation movement and create and expand world-renowned redwood parks — crown jewels of the state and national park systems. So now, in our Centennial year, we’re hosting a week-long celebration October 7-14, 2018 to honor that legacy, renew our commitment to protecting and restoring these remarkable forests, and celebrate the dedication of all those who came before us to save the redwoods.

The exhibit, Sustaining Grandeur: The First 100 Years of Save the Redwoods League, features letters from presidents of the United States and First Ladies, historical photos of coast redwoods and giant sequoia, artifacts and films from the past century, and much more.

A hand-drawn map by celebrated naturalist John Muir. Correspondence to the League from President Barack Obama, including a photo of his family. A signed letter from John F. Kennedy endorsing a grove, dated shortly before his death. These treasures, and more, tell the story of Save the Redwoods League, and are part of an illuminating exhibit at UC Berkeley’s Bancroft Library, called Sustaining Grandeur.
