From forests to creeks to trails, every natural space has a past that predates our conventional history books. Few people today realize that the hills of the East Bay were once home to coast redwood forests of incredible stature. Living among them were the Ohlone people.

New Oakland Exhibit Reveals History of Area’s Once-Ancient Forest

Did you know the ancient coast redwoods that once stood in the San Francisco Bay Area’s East Bay were thought to have been some of the largest? Now you can learn about this history and see the footprint of a giant redwood that once stood in Roberts Regional Recreation Area. The League and East Bay Regional Park District recently unveiled a permanent exhibit.

Old Survivor Documentary: A Celebration of Oakland’s Redwoods

Fueled by California’s Gold Rush in the 1850’s, Oakland’s ancient redwood forest was drastically cut to help build San Francisco. But one old tree was left behind, and with the amazing conservation efforts in the early 1900’s, a second-growth forest around the “Old Survivor” tree was protected as parkland for future generations.

What is home? For me, it is the redwoods. Whether you’re hiking, biking, or in my family’s case, driving, you just can’t beat the redwood forest. Not only are these trees beautiful beyond measure, but they are also a place of bonding and healing. Joaquin Miller Park and Redwood Regional Park have always been my family’s favorite places, and I will always think of them as places of comfort and sanctuary.
