Save the Redwoods League to Protect “Crown Jewel” of the Remaining Giant Sequoia Forests

Save the Redwoods League today announced its opportunity to purchase Alder Creek, the largest remaining privately owned giant sequoia property in the world. The 530-acre Alder Creek property contains hundreds of ancient giant sequoia, 483 of which have a diameter of six feet or larger, including the Stagg Tree, the fifth-largest tree known in the world. Alder Creek is 200 miles from Los Angeles and is surrounded by Giant Sequoia National Monument.

Redwoods Rising Student Apprentices Help Restore Redwood National and State Parks

Eighteen students from Humboldt State University (HSU) are participating in a collaborative restoration project known as Redwoods Rising, gaining valuable knowledge and work experience studying the historically logged coast redwood forests in Redwood National and State Parks this summer.

On Saturday, October 13, more than 730 committed environmentalists gathered in a redwoods-inspired tent in San Francisco’s Union Square to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Save the Redwoods League. The event and its after-party raised over $1.9 million to support the League’s redwood education and parks support programs, which will serve 18,000 students this year and millions of park visitors with improved access and amenities within the parks.

This special edition of this popular program will take place on October 13 during celebration week.

Save the Redwoods League and California State Parks have launched a new digital field trip that explores the challenges, including wildfires, facing our giant sequoia forests. Giant sequoia, the largest living trees on Earth, are found only in California’s Sierra Nevada. Their massive size, singular beauty, and rarity have made them living icons of the natural world and subjects of global fascination. The new giant sequoia program will air live through the Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students program (PORTS).
