Save the Redwoods League is honored to be one of only 10 nonprofits certified by the strict San Francisco Green Business Program, which helps San Francisco businesses operate in an environmentally responsible manner and recognizes them for their efforts. Certification means City and County of San Francisco auditors have verified that a business complies with stringent environmental standards to reduce waste, prevent pollution and conserve resources.

The Tall Trees Grove (pictured) in Redwood National Park gained more protection after Save the Redwoods League recently facilitated the donation of a 120-acre buffer property from private landowners to the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
The weight of salamanders in the redwood ecosystem is greater than that of all other vertebrates collectively because there are so many of the amphibians! Predicted drier forest conditions may threaten amphibian species, said David Wake, Professor of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. Wake and other scientists discussed the impact of climate change on redwood ecosystems at a recent Save the Redwoods League-sponsored symposium.
Conrad Benedicto (pictured), Executive Director of Wilderness Arts and Literacy Collaborative (WALC), is the first recipient of the Save the Redwoods League Redwood Educator of the Year award. WALC helps underserved San Francisco high school students learn about redwoods through an integrated curriculum and extended field trips to redwood parks.
Cleanup of a remote property that Save the Redwoods League purchased has protected endangered California condors, thanks to our members. A helicopter recently removed 24 loads of refuse, each weighing up to 4,000 pounds, from the property acquired in 2010 for addition to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.
You, our members, can be proud of all Save the Redwoods League has achieved in fiscal year 2010 thanks to your generosity: The League protected almost 6,000 acres of redwood forest and supporting landscapes and accelerated restoration of logged forests, planting more than 15,000 trees and removing 3 miles of logging roads.
A reserve harboring some of the world’s tallest trees is easier to find and enjoy, thanks to our members. In November 2010, Save the Redwoods League and California State Parks finished the first $340,000 phase of improvements at Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve (pictured), including new signage, improved parking facilities, new accessible restrooms and picnic tables under the giant trees. The work resulted from an extensive environmental design and review process to make the reserve more accessible while reducing impacts to the trees, creek and the forest landscape.
Robert Van Pelt, PhD, a scientist who’s part of the League’s Redwoods and Climate Change Initiative, is profiled in the new book, Keepers of the Trees: A Guide to Re-Greening North America. The book includes profiles of 13 other North Americans whose lives have been shaped by the forests they are fighting to preserve. Author Ann Linnea offers a captivating look at Van Pelt as a Renaissance man: a big tree hunter, scientist and exquisite artist.
Trails in Portola Redwoods State Park were cleared and widened this summer, thanks to our members and a grant from Save the Redwoods League. The $30,000 grant enabled six high school student volunteers and two leaders to clear fallen trees (pictured), widen a trail for people with disabilities, remove poison oak, rebuild a fence and install a retaining wall. The grant supported the crew from the Student Conservation Association, which fosters career development in land conservation and resource management.

Thanks to our generous members, Save the Redwoods League on April 15, 2010, bought a never-harvested 40-acre redwood property in a steep canyon surrounded by Los Padres National Forest.

Thanks to our members, Save the Redwoods League in March 2010 was able to transfer 200 acres to the Bureau of Land Management, increasing protection of the watershed including the Big River (pictured) and buffering ancient redwoods in Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve (SNR).
